Domsjö Fabriker and Adven plan major LBG facility in Örnsköldsvik

A new project at the High Coast Innovation Park aims to convert industrial side streams into 100 GWh of liquefied biogas annually, potentially cutting 26,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. The initiative seeks to bolster Sweden’s regional energy self-sufficiency and provide a critical fossil-free alternative for the heavy transport sector.

Domsjö Fabriker has applied for a subsidy from Klimatklivet to upgrade its industrial biogas into liquefied biogas (LBG), targeting a commissioning date in the final quarter of 2028. The facility is designed to replace an equivalent volume of fossil diesel, addressing a major hurdle in decarbonizing heavy-duty vehicles and maritime shipping where electrification remains difficult. The partnership with infrastructure developer Adven focuses on maximizing circular resource efficiency within the industrial cluster.

Björn Vedin, CEO of Domsjö Fabriker, emphasized that the project’s viability rests on securing state subsidies and navigating an efficient permitting process with municipal and regional authorities. Beyond its environmental impact, proponents view the plant as a strategic asset for national security, offering a buffer against disruptions in imported fuel supplies. Lena Ek, an Adven board member and former Minister for the Environment, noted that the production could eventually support fossil-free fleets for essential public services, including emergency and police operations.
