Study Links Candela Laser Treatment to Epigenetic Skin Reversal

A peer-reviewed study in Scientific Reports reveals that Candela’s Nordlys 1940 nm non-ablative fractional laser does more than improve surface appearance; it actively remodels the skin's epigenome. Researchers found that the treatment reverses age-associated DNA methylation at 83.9% of the sites most strongly linked to skin aging.

The research, conducted by the Candela Institute for Excellence in partnership with Mitra Bio, provides the first in vivo human evidence that laser technology can modulate epigenetic signatures. By profiling over 3.8 million CpG sites in 22 adults over nine months, investigators observed that the treatment shifted DNA methylation markers toward a more youthful biological state. These changes proved both progressive and durable, with molecular stabilization continuing for up to six months post-treatment.

Beyond visible improvements—such as a 38% median reduction in brown spots and enhanced skin texture—the study identifies a critical molecular connection to skin cancer biology. The laser modulates DNA methylation at specific keratinocyte-regulating loci, including FGFR3 and HOXB4, which are implicated in the development of basal and squamous cell carcinomas. According to lead author Dr. Konika Patel Schallen, these findings provide a biological explanation for clinical observations that have long puzzled dermatologists, suggesting that the Nordlys platform may contribute to long-term skin health by lowering the risk of keratinocyte-carcinoma.
