Ecovyst Expands Sulfur Chemistry Portfolio with Calabrian Acquisition

Ecovyst Inc. has finalized the acquisition of the sulfur dioxide business from INEOS Enterprises, marking a strategic pivot to diversify its chemical offerings. By integrating Calabrian’s specialized derivatives, the Wayne-based company aims to broaden its reach into the pharmaceutical and food processing sectors while bolstering its existing mining and water treatment operations.

The deal moves Ecovyst beyond its traditional reliance on sulfuric acid, positioning the firm as a broader provider of sulfur-based technologies. CEO Kurt J. Bitting noted that the move is designed to drive higher-value growth for stockholders, citing the business’s strong margins and cash generation potential as key drivers for future financial performance. The company expects that identified synergy opportunities will begin to materialize as the integration of the two teams proceeds.

Ecovyst currently maintains a dominant role in the North American market, particularly in sulfuric acid regeneration for the refining industry. By incorporating Calabrian’s production capabilities, the company strengthens its footprint in chemical waste handling and specialty chemical production. The transition marks a significant consolidation of sulfur derivative assets, aiming to provide a more comprehensive suite of services to industrial clients across the continent.
