Pyka Tests Autonomous Cargo DropShip at Army Reserve Exercise

A 200-pound payload drifted toward the ground as the Pyka DropShip completed a precision airdrop during the U.S. Army Reserve's Combat Support Training Exercise. This demonstration marked a shift toward autonomous, runway-independent logistics, testing the aircraft’s ability to navigate contested environments and austere terrain without traditional pilot support.

The exercise, held as part of the Army Reserve's Operation Sentinel Justice, saw the DropShip complete a 20-mile autonomous flight from Gulfport to Diamondhead. Beyond aerial delivery, the aircraft successfully landed on an unimproved grass runway, proving its utility for expeditionary missions where standard airfields are unavailable. Soldiers also integrated the platform into a casualty evacuation scenario, exploring how the technology might handle medical logistics and personnel extraction in high-risk zones.

Michael Norcia, CEO and co-founder of Pyka, noted that the exercise confirmed the platform's ability to bridge critical logistics gaps. With a maximum payload capacity of 550 pounds and a range reaching 3,500 miles, the aircraft is engineered to reach locations that remain impractical for legacy military aviation. This deployment serves as a validation for the Army Reserve’s ongoing evaluation of unmanned systems designed to maintain supply lines in environments where conventional resupply is often restricted or dangerous.
