Alberta Readies Bid for Pacific Crude Pipeline

Alberta is set to unveil a proposal this Thursday for a new pipeline capable of transporting one million barrels of crude oil daily to the Pacific Coast. Premier Danielle Smith aims to leverage Prime Minister Mark Carney’s ambition to establish Canada as a global energy exporter reaching markets beyond the United States.

Alberta Readies Bid for Pacific Crude Pipeline

The provincial government has yet to identify private-sector backers for the ambitious energy corridor, a hurdle highlighted by Prime Minister Carney during a press event in Quebec. While Carney advocates for infrastructure to diversify Canada’s trade options, industry leaders remain skeptical of the current financial landscape. Cenovus Energy CEO John McKenzie recently argued that Canada’s regulatory environment renders private financing for such a project impossible under current conditions.

Federal support for the pipeline remains conditional, tied to the construction of expensive carbon-capture and storage facilities. Oil companies maintain that the Pathways carbon-capture initiative requires significant government funding to be viable. This pipeline push unfolds against a backdrop of regional tension, as Alberta prepares for an October vote on whether to pursue a formal referendum regarding independence from Canada, a move driven by widespread frustration over federal environmental policies.
