SeAH Besteel Secures Proprietary Hydrogen Infrastructure Tech

SeAH Besteel has become the first South Korean manufacturer to independently secure core technologies for high-pressure hydrogen transport and storage. Developed through national research initiatives, these materials aim to replace aging infrastructure components and lower the operational costs associated with hydrogen refueling stations.

The company successfully engineered 100-bar class high-pressure seamless pipe material alongside specialized hydrogen storage alloys. The new pipe material, boasting a yield strength of 485 MPa, is designed to withstand extreme hydrogen environments that typically cause embrittlement in standard steel. By allowing for 100-bar pressure, the technology significantly surpasses the capacity of Korea's existing 20-bar pipeline networks, enabling more efficient long-distance gas transport.

Beyond transport, the firm addressed the bottleneck of mechanical compression at refueling stations. Current mechanical systems account for nearly half of total station installation and maintenance costs. SeAH Besteel’s new storage alloy provides a non-mechanical alternative for compressing and discharging hydrogen, promising to improve the economic viability of the broader hydrogen ecosystem. Following current demo-plant verifications, the company plans to move into full-scale commercialization to stabilize domestic and international supply chains.
