Keeping Pets Safe During Summer Heat and Outdoor Activity

If the summer pavement is too hot for your own palm, it is already a danger to your dog’s sensitive paws. As temperatures climb, the TurfMutt Foundation is urging pet owners to rethink backyard maintenance and outdoor habits to protect animals from heat exhaustion and equipment-related injuries.

Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the TurfMutt Foundation, emphasizes that summer fun requires a heightened level of caution regarding both the environment and human activity. Beyond monitoring heat, owners must account for the mechanical hazards present in modern landscaping. Lawn mowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers should remain strictly off-limits to pets, with all equipment stored securely when not in use.

Landscaping choices also play a critical role in animal wellness. The foundation recommends auditing backyard greenery to ensure all plants are non-toxic, pointing to the ASPCA’s database as a primary resource for verifying safe flora. When venturing out, Kiser advises keeping pets supervised near water, using life jackets where necessary, and creating quiet indoor sanctuaries to shield animals from the anxiety and noise associated with holiday fireworks. For those traveling, maintaining current microchip information and securing pets in harnesses remains the standard for preventing accidents during road trips.
