Lawsuits Mount Over Ozempic Link to Permanent Vision Loss

Two new lawsuits filed in Georgia and California allege that patients suffered permanent, irreversible vision loss after using Novo Nordisk’s popular weight-loss drug, Ozempic. The complaints center on non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, or NAION, a condition that permanently damages the optic nerve by restricting vital blood flow.

The legal action, brought by the firm Parker Waichman LLP, follows mounting scientific data connecting semaglutide—the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy—to severe ocular complications. Research from Harvard’s Mass Eye and Ear Institute suggests that non-diabetic patients using the medication for weight management face a sevenfold increase in the risk of developing NAION compared to those who do not use the drug. A 2025 study published in JAMA Ophthalmology further corroborated these concerns, documenting optic nerve disorders in patients following GLP-1 therapy.

Jason S. Goldstein, senior litigation counsel at Parker Waichman, accuses the manufacturer of failing to provide adequate warnings to medical professionals and patients regarding these risks. Despite the findings, Novo Nordisk has not updated its safety labeling to reflect the potential for sudden blindness. The firm is now consolidating cases nationwide, seeking compensation for victims who suffered permanent damage, medical expenses, and lost wages due to what they characterize as corporate negligence.
