Arizona Doula Initiative Scales Postpartum Care with New Grant

One in five Arizona women experience maternal mental health symptoms, yet postpartum resources remain critically sparse. To bridge this gap, 4th Trimester Arizona is utilizing a $100,000 Momentum Maker Grant to certify community-based doulas and integrate them directly into the state’s Medicaid, or AHCCCS, reimbursement framework.

The 'It Takes a Village' initiative focuses on removing the administrative and financial barriers that often prevent doulas from serving low-income families. By covering training and certification costs, the project has successfully moved 13 doulas through state certification, with nine currently navigating the complex Medicaid approval process. Two practitioners have already achieved status as approved providers under at least one health plan, marking a shift toward sustainable, relationship-based care.

Dr. Jennie Bever, CEO of 4th Trimester Arizona, noted that the current medical system frequently leaves mothers without adequate support during their most vulnerable months. Doulas act as a vital bridge, providing cultural and linguistic alignment that clinical settings often lack. For practitioners like Brionna Giles, founder of Your Birth Story Birth Services, this funding provides the necessary infrastructure to turn community support into a sustainable profession, ensuring that families receive consistent guidance from pregnancy through recovery.
