PJM Grid Operator Issues Emergency Alerts as Heat Wave Strains Power

PJM Interconnection has ordered power producers to maximize generation through July 3, extending emergency alerts across its 13-state footprint as extreme temperatures drive electricity demand toward record levels. The grid operator is prioritizing supply stability while a sweltering heat wave impacts more than two dozen states through the holiday weekend.

The grid operator, which manages power for roughly 67 million people, requested that transmission owners and generators defer or cancel all non-essential equipment maintenance and testing. By keeping units online, PJM aims to ensure sufficient capacity to meet the cooling-driven surges currently gripping the Midwest, the South, and the East Coast. While the Maximum Generation Alert specifically targets power producers, PJM emphasized that residential and commercial customers are not required to take action at this time.

This move follows a string of alerts issued earlier this week, including a Hot Weather Alert that remains in effect through July 4. These proactive steps come as the energy industry faces mounting pressure from both environmental conditions and shifting consumption patterns. Earlier this year, the North American Electric Reliability Corp warned that rapid load growth, particularly from data centers and large-scale computing facilities, continues to complicate summer reliability across the United States.
