Hanon Systems Shifts to PFAS-Free Refrigerants for Automotive Cooling

As the automotive industry faces intensifying scrutiny over the environmental impact of fluorinated refrigerants, Seoul-based Hanon Systems has unveiled a white paper detailing its transition toward PFAS-free natural alternatives. The company is positioning carbon dioxide and propane technologies as the primary successors to current industry standards like R1234yf.

The shift addresses concerns surrounding trifluoroacetic acid, a persistent contaminant formed by the degradation of conventional refrigerants. Hanon Systems is leveraging its existing infrastructure to accelerate this pivot, building on an established track record that includes deploying R744-based components—such as electric compressors and gas coolers—in over one million vehicles. By integrating these systems with emerging R290 propane solutions, the manufacturer aims to provide a scalable path for automakers navigating tightening global environmental regulations.

Soo Il Lee, Vice Chairman and CEO of Hanon Systems, stated that the document underscores the company’s intent to lead the market in sustainable thermal management. With 50 manufacturing sites globally, the firm is currently coordinating with automotive partners to implement these natural refrigerant technologies in future vehicle platforms.
