The project involves both the additional bedding and a comprehensive reconfiguration of clinical space designed to support newborns with complex medical needs. As a designated Level IV facility, the unit provides around-the-clock access to multidisciplinary teams, including specialists in cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, and surgery. Dr. Sushmita Yallapragada, a pediatric neonatologist at the center and associate professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center, noted that the upgrade allows the institution to better manage the increasing volume of critical care cases across the region.

This immediate expansion serves as a bridge to the health system's long-term infrastructure goals. Construction is currently underway on a new $5 billion pediatric campus, slated to open in 2031. Once operational, the Moody Children's Hospital will further scale NICU capacity to 96 beds. The new facility will also feature a direct skybridge connection to the William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, intended to streamline the continuum of care for mothers and their newborns.
