Vitalant Reports Two-Year Low in Type O Blood Reserves

With national type O blood reserves hitting their lowest point in two years, nonprofit provider Vitalant is issuing an urgent appeal for donors. The shortage, exacerbated by a decline in turnout during the recent Independence Day holiday, leaves hospitals with dwindling supplies of the most frequently transfused blood type.

Every two seconds, a patient in the United States requires a transfusion, making type O blood the most requested resource in the medical system. Because O-negative donors can help any patient and O-positive blood is required by nearly 40% of the population, these supplies are vital during trauma and emergency scenarios. Amie Rawson, Vitalant’s senior vice president of donor services, noted that when reserves falter, clinicians are forced to prioritize patients, potentially delaying care for those who can wait.

The recent holiday period significantly hampered collection efforts. As millions of Americans traveled for the Independence Day week, Vitalant reported a deficit of several thousand donations. To stabilize the supply through the end of July, the organization is incentivizing appointments at its centers. Donors who schedule a slot by July 11 using the promo code JULYGIFT-2026-V receive a $20 reward, and all donors between July 9 and August 8 will be entered into a sweepstakes to win a vehicle valued at $30,000. Appointments can be booked via the Vitalant website or their mobile application.
