Ukrainian Drone Strike Paralyses Russia's Omsk Refinery

A Ukrainian long-range drone strike has crippled the Omsk oil refinery, Russia's largest processing facility, forcing an immediate halt to fuel production. The attack on the 440,000-barrel-per-day plant in western Siberia marks a significant escalation, pushing Moscow’s already strained energy sector toward a deeper supply crisis.

Ukrainian Drone Strike Paralyses Russia's Omsk Refinery

The strike targeted the CDU-10 crude distillation unit, which accounts for 38% of the refinery's total capacity, while damaging critical infrastructure that forced the shutdown of a second major unit, CDU-11. Gazprom Neft immediately suspended all gasoline and diesel sales on the St. Petersburg commodity exchange, signaling the severity of the industrial disruption.

This strike deepens a domestic fuel shortage that President Vladimir Putin previously dismissed as isolated. With the Kremlin already enforcing export restrictions on gasoline and jet fuel, the loss of the Omsk facility exacerbates regional instability. Central Asian partners, including Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, are already reporting significant supply gaps and rising costs, while Moscow has reportedly begun seeking jet fuel imports from Asia—a stark reversal for a global energy giant. Ukraine’s strategy remains clear: by targeting refineries far beyond the front lines, Kyiv is turning fuel availability into a persistent, high-stakes battlefield for the Kremlin.
