Rakuten Viber Integrates ChatGPT Tools Directly into Messaging

Rakuten Viber has launched a global partnership with OpenAI, embedding ChatGPT tools directly into its messaging platform. Users can now access AI-powered features—ranging from message drafting and language translation to image editing and chat summarization—without exiting the application or requiring an external ChatGPT account.

The integration introduces a dedicated ChatGPT contact for direct queries, while also allowing users to summon the assistant into private or group conversations by tagging @ChatGPT. To maintain clarity, AI-generated responses are visually distinct from human messages. Privacy remains a priority, with the company noting that only specific interactions shared with the bot are sent to OpenAI for processing, rather than the entire history of a chat.

Beyond basic text assistance, the update includes advanced capabilities such as Image Remix for photo personalization, link summarization for shared articles, and a polish tool for refining message tone. CEO Ofir Eyal described the move as a strategy to add practical, everyday value to the user experience, even for those who might not otherwise seek out AI tools. While most features are available immediately upon updating the app, some require a one-time login to ChatGPT for higher usage limits. The rollout is currently active globally, excluding regions where local regulations or service availability prevent access.
