Largest Healthcare Strike in Massachusetts History Begins Wednesday

A historic labor standoff begins Wednesday morning as 4,500 nurses and clinicians represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association walk off the job. The action follows months of failed contract negotiations between the union and Mass General Brigham, effectively disrupting healthcare services across multiple hospital campuses and home care sites.

The strike involves 4,000 nurses from Brigham and Women's Hospital and 450 clinicians from MGB Home Care, marking the largest mobilization of healthcare professionals in state history. Union representatives argue that MGB executives have prioritized corporate profits over essential patient safety standards, rejecting compromise proposals intended to improve staffing retention and recruitment.

Kelly Morgan, chair of the BWH MNA Bargaining Committee, stated that executives have spent years ignoring safety concerns while refusing to invest in the workforce. Simultaneously, Shannon Viera, representing the home care clinicians, emphasized that the decision to strike was a last resort after over a year of failed attempts to secure a fair first contract. The walkout triggers a one-day strike for hospital nurses, followed by a four-day lockout imposed by the health system, while home care clinicians have initiated a seven-day strike. Picket lines are established at the main hospital campus on Francis Street in Boston and at various regional home care offices, including locations in Beverly, Braintree, Chelsea, and Newton.
