Directed by Dr. Joe Deweese, the summer initiative provides undergraduates with hands-on experience in structural biology, bacterial genomics, and bioinformatics. The program distinguishes itself by offering these research opportunities directly on the Henderson campus, a rarity for institutions of this size. Participants include a diverse cohort of students, such as junior biochemistry major Xavier Falkenheim and South African senior Philly Nong, who are preparing for careers in medical research and clinical practice.

Beyond summer initiatives, the university recently honored 14 individuals as Heintzman Research Scholars for their contributions throughout the 2025-26 academic year. Named for the Heintzman family, these awards recognize academic excellence under the guidance of faculty mentors including Dr. Brian Butterfield, Lee Barton, and Dr. Caleb Kersey. The scholars include Lily Simpson Amar, Jeanne Siebel, Elli Chumley, Nathan King, Zoe Imel, Olivia White, Xavier Falkenheim, Joseph "JT" Moore, Thabo Mahlaha, Joshua Clay Smith, Jonathan Graves, Brayden Smith, Evan Vance, and Megan Lampley.
