Projects range from disaster preparedness kits in the Mississippi Delta to the construction of accessible gardens and transit solutions in rural counties. Since the program’s inception in 2017, AARP has distributed more than $500,000 across Mississippi to help municipalities and nonprofits adapt to an aging demographic.

Kimberly L. Campbell, AARP Mississippi State Director, noted that the funding empowers local residents to tackle specific quality-of-life challenges. From installing bike safety markings in Pontotoc to repairing walking tracks in Lena, the selected projects aim to foster environments where older adults can remain independent and engaged. Nancy LeaMond, AARP’s Executive Vice President, emphasized that these small-scale, locally driven improvements provide the necessary foundation for communities to support residents at every stage of life.
