Pennsylvania American Water Urges Voluntary Cuts Amid Drought Watch

Residents and businesses across nine Pennsylvania counties are being asked to trim water consumption by up to 15% following a state-issued drought watch. While current supply levels remain adequate, the utility company is pushing for proactive conservation to stave off potential, more restrictive measures if conditions deteriorate further.

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection expanded its drought watch declaration, affecting 18 counties statewide. Pennsylvania American Water serves half of those regions, including Adams, Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Northampton, and York. Brandy Braun, the utility’s director of water quality and environmental compliance, noted that the request aims to manage resources ahead of a possible escalation in drought severity.

State officials recently elevated the status of Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon, and Lehigh counties from a watch to a warning. This shift follows an analysis of precipitation, groundwater levels, soil moisture, and surface water flow. To assist customers in meeting the requested 11-16 gallon daily reduction, the company provides online tools, including a water use calculator and resources for leak detection. Recommended strategies range from running full laundry loads to switching to WaterSense-certified appliances.
