MultiDimension Technology Unveils Ultra-Low Power Dual-Axis Magnetic Sensor

Engineers at MultiDimension Technology are targeting smart utility metering and industrial automation with the TMR1228D, a new dual-axis magnetic switch IC. By utilizing Tunneling Magnetoresistance technology, the sensor maintains continuous operation while consuming only 1.5μA per axis, effectively bypassing the reliability issues inherent in traditional duty-cycled Hall-effect alternatives.

The TMR1228D integrates independent X- and Y-axis sensing channels capable of generating quadrature A/B outputs. This configuration allows for precise tracking of rotary and linear position, speed, and direction. Because the device operates with a sensitivity of ±5 Gauss, it enables designers to utilize smaller magnets and maintain wider air-gaps, providing greater mechanical flexibility in tight assembly environments.

For systems requiring different thresholds, the company also provides the TMR1228D’s sibling, the TMR1222D, which offers a ±17 Gauss operating point within the same DFN8L package. Both components are rated for industrial use between -40°C and +125°C and support an operating voltage range of 1.8V to 5.5V. These sensors are designed to handle high-frequency responses up to 1kHz, ensuring they remain viable for demanding motion control and battery-powered sensing applications.
