Mesabi Metallics Breaks Ground on Minnesota Iron Range

A 66-hole blast in Nashwauk, Minnesota, fractured 211,000 tons of rock this week, marking the first major iron ore extraction at a new site in the state in half a century. The operation signals the launch of domestic production for high-quality DR-grade pellets intended to reduce reliance on foreign imports.

The controlled explosion cleared the first ramp into the pit, allowing 400-ton haul trucks to begin moving ore toward processing facilities. According to Shane Holman, General Manager of Mine Operations, this milestone transitions the project from a preparatory phase into active production. The site is slated to begin delivering its proprietary 'Patriot Pellet' by the end of the third quarter.

This project, backed by a $2.5 billion investment from Essar Group, aims to bolster the domestic defense industrial base and shipbuilding sectors. CEO Joe Broking stated that the facility is designed to secure the supply chain for American steelmakers, positioning the Iron Range as a primary hub for high-grade raw materials. Weekly blasting operations are scheduled to continue as the company scales toward full-capacity output.
