Anixa Biosciences Secures Australian Patent for Breast Cancer Vaccine

IP Australia has issued a Notice of Acceptance for Anixa Biosciences' breast cancer vaccine technology, marking a strategic expansion for the company’s intellectual property portfolio. The patent covers the vaccine’s unique adjuvants and formulations, reinforcing the biotech firm’s international footprint in the high-incidence market of Australia.

The newly accepted patent, titled Vaccine Adjuvants and Formulations, was developed at the Cleveland Clinic and exclusively licensed to the San Jose-based company. It joins a growing list of protections already secured in the United States, Japan, China, and across Europe. For Anixa, the move is a preparatory step toward potential regulatory approval and future commercial partnerships outside the U.S. market.

This technology targets human α-lactalbumin, a protein typically associated with lactation that appears in certain aggressive breast cancers, including triple-negative variants. By utilizing a retired protein strategy, the vaccine aims to prime the immune system to prevent tumor formation without damaging healthy tissue. Recent Phase 1 trial data, funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, showed the vaccine met primary safety endpoints and generated immune responses in over 74% of participants. Dr. Amit Kumar, Chairman and CEO of Anixa, noted that this international recognition validates the platform’s potential as the company seeks to address the rising global incidence of breast cancer.
