Catherine Hershey Schools Opens First Early Education Center in Lancaster

A former school campus in Pequea Township has been transformed into a hub for early childhood development, as Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning officially opened its first Lancaster County location on Tuesday. The 28,000-square-foot facility now provides tuition-free care to 100 children from under-resourced backgrounds.

The ribbon-cutting at 393 Long Lane marks the fourth of six planned centers in Pennsylvania under a $350 million initiative. The site, formerly occupied by the Lancaster Mennonite School, has been renovated to include specialized innovation studios and over 13,000 square feet of outdoor play area. The center is already operating at full capacity, primarily serving families residing or working within the Penn Manor, Solanco, and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts.

Beyond traditional instruction, the facility emphasizes holistic support through a partnership with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, offering speech, occupational, and behavioral therapy services. MHS and CHS President Peter G. Gurt noted that the expansion honors the legacy of Milton and Catherine Hershey, whose historical ties to the region shaped their philanthropic mission. The center employs 60 staff members and operates year-round, with additional locations in Elizabethtown and Lancaster City currently in the development pipeline.
