The new optic features a constant f/2.8 aperture, making it a viable tool for low-light environments and astrophotography. Its optical construction includes an eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical (XGM) element and three additional Glass Molded elements to mitigate peripheral blurring and chromatic aberration. Tamron claims the design effectively manages sagittal coma flare, a frequent hurdle for those capturing night skies.

Beyond its core focal range, the lens offers a minimum focus distance of 7.1 inches at the wide end, allowing for dramatic close-up perspectives. The internal mechanism utilizes a VXD linear motor for autofocus, and the exterior is moisture-resistant with a fluorine-coated front element. Photographers can also integrate the lens with Tamron’s proprietary software to customize controls.
