Cambium Networks Wi-Fi Powers Connectivity on the ISS

Floating 250 miles above Earth, the International Space Station now relies on Cambium Networks hardware to maintain its digital heartbeat. After clearing a two-year gauntlet of radiation and environmental testing, the enterprise-grade access points are facilitating everything from critical science payloads to personal calls home for the current crew.

The hardware reached orbit during the SpaceX CRS-30 resupply mission and now resides in the station’s Unity and Harmony modules. These units replace aging 802.11n infrastructure, providing a modern wireless backbone managed by the cnMaestro X system. This upgrade supports up to 12 crew members and a dense array of tablets, laptops, and IoT robotics that drift through the modules daily.

NASA subjected the equipment to exhaustive radiation and heavy-ion exposure assessments to ensure operational integrity in the vacuum of space. Morgan Kurk, CEO of Cambium Networks, noted that the successful deployment serves as a definitive stress test for the company’s terrestrial networking solutions. By proving reliability in such an extreme environment, the company aims to highlight the robustness of the technology currently deployed in hospitals and schools across the globe.
