Aetna survey finds rising provider trust and tech-driven efficiency

U.S. healthcare providers report a growing sense of confidence in payers, with trust scores climbing to 6.1 from 5.4 in the previous quarter. According to the second quarterly Aetna Provider Survey, clinicians increasingly view digital integration as the primary lever to reduce administrative overhead and improve patient care outcomes.

The survey, which polled 723 industry participants including physicians and health IT leaders, indicates a shift in the provider-payer dynamic. Over half of the respondents now agree that payers are delivering on their commitments and providing clearer coverage information. Steve Nelson, Executive Vice President of Aetna, stated that these gains reflect a concerted effort to listen to provider partners, though he acknowledged that the industry still faces significant hurdles.

Administrative burden remains the primary obstacle to clinical efficiency. A substantial 84% of providers identified prior authorization and manual record management as their most pressing challenges. Technology-enabled solutions are emerging as the solution: 80% of respondents expect to reclaim at least 30 minutes of daily time through digital tools. Beyond internal savings, providers highlighted that interoperability and real-time data access lead to more informed treatment decisions, fewer claim denials, and shorter wait times for patient approvals. Looking ahead, 84% of the surveyed group expressed optimism that technological advancements will yield better long-term health outcomes.
