PG&E Eyes Preemptive Blackouts Across Ten California Counties

High winds and parched vegetation have placed 7,800 customers in Northern and Central California on notice for potential power shutoffs. Pacific Gas and Electric officials are monitoring a high-risk weather window starting Wednesday afternoon, marking the utility's third attempt to mitigate wildfire threats through grid de-energization this year.

The utility has activated its Emergency Operations Center to manage the situation, which spans regions from the North Bay to the Salinas and San Joaquin valleys. While the current scope targets thousands of households, the company cautioned that real-time shifts in wind speed and humidity could force the team to either delay, expand, or cancel the outages entirely.

These Public Safety Power Shutoffs serve as a last-resort fire prevention tactic. Recent internal simulations suggest that a similar intervention in May successfully shielded approximately 270,000 acres from potential ignition. To minimize public disruption, the company has increasingly relied on grid upgrades and energy storage systems, noting that the scale of these events has dropped significantly from the 2 million customers affected during the 2019 season to roughly 18,000 throughout 2025.
