The 11-day hiking expedition, scheduled to debut in March 2027, focuses on a region that remained largely inaccessible until a coalition of conservation groups secured a $63 million purchase of the Hacienda Puchegüín estate in 2025. This acquisition safeguarded 11% of the world’s remaining alerce forests—home to ancient trees that can live over 3,600 years—and established the area as a protected nature sanctuary. By collaborating directly with Puelo Patagonia, the tour operator aims to model a sustainable tourism framework that funnels economic support to local guides and the baqueanos, the traditional horsemen who have served as the valley's generational stewards.
Groups are limited to 12 guests, who will navigate granite-walled terrain and packraft the Class II+ rapids of the Puelo and Ventisquero rivers. The itinerary includes four nights at a private camp and exclusive access to a refugio at La Junta. With pricing starting at $9,695, the program is designed for experienced hikers willing to tackle daily treks of up to nine miles with significant elevation changes. This initiative builds on MT Sobek’s historical footprint in the region, which dates back to their 1987 expedition that helped bring global recognition to Torres del Paine.
