Hyundai confirmed the move Thursday, noting that shareholders are currently reviewing the transition. While financial terms remain undisclosed, the acquisition builds on the 2021 agreement that initially valued the robotics company at $1.1 billion. By securing total ownership, Hyundai aims to fuse its existing supply chain and mobility infrastructure with Boston Dynamics’ specialized software and hardware expertise.
The deployment of the Atlas humanoid robot is set to begin at a Georgia facility by 2028, starting with parts sequencing before expanding into complex component assembly by 2030. However, this transition has sparked immediate friction at home. South Korean auto workers recently staged the industry’s first strike specifically targeting the integration of humanoid robots, citing fears over job security and potential cuts to work hours. Union representatives are now pushing for fixed salary structures and AI-linked bonuses to hedge against the rapid pace of factory automation.
