The award was presented on June 17 at the Apartmentalize conference in New Orleans, marking a milestone for the Boca Raton-based firm. Mill Creek manages a portfolio of 150 communities and over 42,700 rental homes, utilizing a decentralized model where local offices appoint task force leads to execute community-specific projects. This structure allows teams to address localized needs—ranging from food insecurity to shelter support—while maintaining a consistent philanthropic standard across the country.
Bill MacDonald, chairman and CEO of Mill Creek, credited the win to the passion of the company's associates. The Month of Service, launched in 2023, has evolved from a simple volunteer day into a broad strategic program. Previous annual focuses included homelessness, at-risk youth, and mental health. In 2025 alone, roughly 40% of the company's workforce participated in the initiative, logging 3,856 hours and supporting 18 nonprofit partners. Beyond the June events, the company incentivizes individual volunteerism by providing paid time off for charity work, which saw a 138.5% increase in utilization between 2024 and 2025. These collective efforts, alongside long-standing partnerships like the Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland Golf Tournament, underscore the firm’s push to institutionalize community engagement within the multifamily housing sector.
