MSPAlliance Welcomes Department of Defense Pause on CMMC Phase II

The Department of Defense has officially suspended Phase II of the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification, a move MSPAlliance characterizes as a vital reset. The trade association argues that the pause allows for a necessary recalibration of compliance requirements to ensure national security without stifling the defense industrial base.

MSPAlliance CEO Charles Weaver emphasized that effective defense cybersecurity relies on practical standards rather than bureaucratic overhead. For years, the organization has cautioned that the current framework imposes significant financial and operational strains on small to mid-sized contractors, potentially forcing capable firms out of the defense market entirely. By pausing the rollout, the Pentagon now has the opportunity to streamline administrative complexity, improve assessment accessibility, and align certification requirements with actual business operations.

Despite the suspension, industry experts urge contractors to maintain their focus on existing security protocols, including alignment with NIST SP 800-171. The association maintains that the goal of the review period should be to build a sustainable program that balances rigorous protection with market participation. MSPAlliance continues to offer its Cyber Verify and CMMC readiness programs to assist providers in navigating these requirements as the government reevaluates its approach to supply chain resilience.
