Empson USA Breaks Italian Mold with Prestigious French Estate Additions

For over fifty years, Empson USA has built its reputation as the premier gatekeeper for Italian fine wines in the American market. Today, the Alexandria-based importer signaled a strategic shift, announcing the addition of five family-owned French estates to its portfolio, spanning the regions of Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne.

The expansion introduces notable producers including Château Kirwan in Margaux, Château Malescasse in Haut-Médoc, and Château Franc Mayne in Saint-Émilion. Joining them are Burgundy’s Maison de la Chapelle and Champagne Gérin & Fils. These partnerships move the company beyond its traditional Italian focus, which includes established names like Fuligni and Costanti, and align with a broader strategy to represent family-owned wineries across global terroirs.

CEO Tara Empson framed the move as the fulfillment of a long-standing vision held by her father, company founder Neil Empson, who sought to pair Italy’s output with France’s legendary viticulture. Delphine and Grégory Viennois, owners of Maison de la Chapelle, noted that the alignment of corporate values and a shared commitment to estate-level authenticity drove the decision to grant Empson exclusive U.S. representation. By integrating these French producers, the firm is positioning itself to navigate shifting consumer preferences through a focus on high-end, place-driven labels.
