Ancient Americas Converge at the Shanghai Museum

Beneath a towering symbolic World Tree, the Shanghai Museum has launched the largest exhibition on ancient American civilizations ever assembled. Bringing together nearly 3,000 artifacts from Mexico, Peru, and China, the display spans three millennia of history, transforming the museum into an immersive landscape of pyramids, jaguars, and sacred ritual.

Occupying 7,000 square meters of gallery space, the exhibition moves beyond traditional timelines to explore the spiritual and engineering achievements of Mesoamerican cultures. Visitors encounter high-fidelity reconstructions and multimedia installations that bridge archaeology and mythology, creating a vertical cosmos within the heart of People’s Square. The experience extends far beyond the gallery walls, encompassing a 10,000-square-meter footprint that engages the senses through sight, sound, and taste.

The project represents a massive collaborative effort between the Shanghai Museum, Mexico’s Secretariat of Culture, and the Peruvian Ministry of Culture. To deepen the connection to urban life, the museum has partnered with local institutions like the Shanghai Zoo and Chenshan National Botanical Garden. This citywide initiative features themed metro trains, river cruises, and pop-up cultural spaces, ensuring the influence of the exhibition permeates the entire metropolis. With over 3,000 curated products and specialized dining programs, the museum aims to integrate ancient history into the daily rhythm of modern Shanghai.
