British Airways chooses Pratt & Whitney engines for A320neo expansion

British Airways has committed to upgrading its fleet with Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engines, securing a deal for 33 firm orders and 30 options for its Airbus A320neo aircraft. Announced at the Farnborough International Airshow, the agreement includes a 12-year EngineWise maintenance contract, with deliveries scheduled to commence in 2027.

The selection marks a significant shift for the UK flag carrier as it seeks to modernize its international operations. Pratt & Whitney president Rick Deurloo described the partnership as a pivotal vote of confidence in the geared turbofan architecture, which the manufacturer claims is the most fuel-efficient option currently available for the A320neo platform.

Beyond the initial hardware acquisition, the 12-year service agreement aims to stabilize long-term maintenance costs and improve fleet reliability. The GTF engine technology offers a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and a 75% smaller noise footprint compared to older engine generations. With over 2,800 GTF-powered aircraft currently in service worldwide, Pratt & Whitney continues to build on a backlog of more than 8,000 units. The upcoming GTF Advantage configuration, expected to enter service later this year, promises further improvements in range and time-on-wing performance for global operators.
