SMBC Aviation Expands Boeing Fleet with 100-Jet Order

The purchase agreement, finalized Monday, splits the order between 60 of the 737-10 jets and 40 units of the 737-8 line. This move signals a strategic shift for the aviation finance platform, which is betting on the long-term viability of the highest-capacity MAX configuration to capture market share.

Chief Executive Peter Barrett noted that the transaction secures a pipeline of new technology aircraft for the company’s airline customers. According to Barrett, the order reflects an industry-wide trend toward upgauging, providing operators the necessary hardware to pursue growth ambitions through the next decade.
