Nuvation Bio Expands Safusidenib Trials After Strong Phase 2 Results

Nuvation Bio has reported durable clinical success for its investigational drug safusidenib, with updated Phase 2 data showing a 52% objective response rate in IDH1-mutant glioma patients. Following these results, the company is launching two additional clinical trials to test the inhibitor across a broader range of patient populations.

The updated findings from the J201 study, which tracked patients for a median of 38.8 months, underscore the long-term potential of the oral brain-penetrant inhibitor. Researchers reported a 79.1% progression-free survival rate at the 36-month mark, with the safety profile remaining consistent throughout the extended follow-up period. This evidence provides the foundation for Nuvation Bio’s strategy to position the drug as a comprehensive option for those with IDH1-mutant brain cancers.

To address significant clinical gaps, the company is initiating a Phase 3 study (G307) for newly diagnosed grade 2 glioma patients in regions outside the U.S. where access to existing targeted therapies is limited. Simultaneously, a new Phase 2 trial (G209) will focus on U.S. patients whose disease has progressed after treatment with vorasidenib. These efforts complement the ongoing pivotal SIGMA study, aiming to establish safusidenib as a viable intervention for patients facing limited options after first-line treatment failure.
