The network relies on foundational technology from TrellisWare Technologies, a firm recognized for its MANET solutions in defense and allied operations. Unlike standard commercial infrastructure, this system is built to be autonomous and self-healing. Under normal conditions, the platform integrates with traditional carrier services, but it automatically transitions to independent operation during congestion or infrastructure degradation. This allows mission-critical users, such as utilities and emergency responders, to maintain connectivity without relying on centralized backhaul or core network resources.

Project Fortis is currently active across 18 U.S. markets, with broader deployment efforts scheduled throughout 2026. The architecture supports a variety of high-stakes applications, including real-time situational awareness, asset tracking, and autonomous vehicle coordination. MidWave CEO John Kneuer noted that while modern networks are hardened against disasters, no system guarantees 100% availability. By layering this MANET capability over existing infrastructure, the company aims to provide a reliable fallback for environments where communications continuity is essential.
