The initiative, launched July 20 at the Korean National Commission for UNESCO in Seoul, aims to bridge the gap between theoretical principles and technical execution. The curriculum is built upon the 2021 UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, a framework adopted by 193 member states. By partnering with the learning platform Coursera, the project provides 10 modules featuring expertise from institutions including Stanford, Oxford, and Carnegie Mellon.

This collaboration marks the first instance of a South Korean private AI research entity leading a full-cycle content development project with a UN agency. Beyond the online modules, LG AI Research and UNESCO plan to launch pilot offline training programs in South Korea later this year, with intentions to scale these sessions to regional universities by 2026. The project reflects a broader shift in South Korea’s role within the global AI landscape, moving from an adopter of international regulations to a primary contributor in shaping global governance and digital inclusion standards.
