Archer Aviation and Anduril Unveil Dual-Use Autonomous Aircraft

Shares of Archer Aviation climbed 11% to $4.93 on Monday following the announcement of a new autonomous platform developed alongside defense firm Anduril Industries. Designed for both commercial use and military assault, the hybrid-electric rotorcraft seeks to bridge the gap between runway-independent mobility and heavy-payload defense operations.

Archer Aviation and Anduril Unveil Dual-Use Autonomous Aircraft

The platform, dubbed Thunder, functions as a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft intended to complement existing crewed military aircraft. By utilizing a hybrid-electric propulsion system and dual tiltrotors, the vehicle aims to balance vertical takeoff capabilities with the efficiency of wingborne cruise flight. This configuration is engineered to increase payload capacity and speed while lowering the aircraft's acoustic signature during low-altitude maneuvers.

Archer and Anduril have already conducted multiple test flights with full-scale surrogate models to validate the design. While the companies target a maiden flight for the Thunder platform in 2027, commercial expansion is moving faster. Archer intends to reveal its initial commercial partners for the technology later this week, though the specific financial terms of the partnership remain undisclosed.
