Communications Stocks Rally as AMC Surprises and Paramount Deal Stalls

While media giants face regulatory friction, the broader communications sector saw gains during a cautious start to the trading week. AMC Entertainment emerged as a standout performer, with shares surging after the theater operator reported adjusted earnings of 14 cents per share for the quarter ending June 30. This result significantly outperformed Wall Street expectations, which had projected a 4 cent loss. Revenue for the period climbed 14% to $1.59 billion, bolstered by the box-office performance of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which generated $264.1 million globally.

In Europe, Telecom Italia’s board signaled support for a takeover bid from Poste Italiane. The group’s largest shareholder aims to secure full control of the firm through an offer valued at 13 billion euros, or approximately $14.87 billion. The move arrives just before the formal launch of the bid, marking a significant consolidation effort in the regional telecommunications market.
