ADNOC Commits $6.2 Billion to Umm Shaif Gas Expansion

A $6.2 billion investment will unlock 600 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day in Abu Dhabi, marking a significant acceleration in the UAE’s push for domestic energy self-sufficiency. The Umm Shaif Gas Cap project aims to meet rising global demand and bolster the nation's liquefied natural gas export capacity by 2030.

ADNOC Commits $6.2 Billion to Umm Shaif Gas Expansion

ADNOC is partnering with TotalEnergies, Eni, and the China National Petroleum Corporation to execute the development. The capital outlay includes $5.1 billion earmarked for large-scale offshore infrastructure, split into three separate engineering, procurement, and construction packages. Additionally, ADNOC Drilling will manage a $365 million program to drill 14 wells over the next 18 months, utilizing three existing rigs to bring the field online.

This move follows a recent trend of consolidation and expansion within the emirate’s energy sector, including the decision to grant BP and TotalEnergies a 10% stake each in the neighboring Bab Gas Cap project. The Umm Shaif initiative alone represents nearly 10% of the UAE's current daily gas consumption. To support these logistical ambitions, ADNOC Logistics and Services recently placed a $900 million order for four newbuild LNG carriers, signaling a long-term commitment to capturing a larger share of the international gas market.
