UK Labour Scraps Electricity VAT to Ease Household Energy Costs

Within twenty-four hours of taking office, Prime Minister Andy Burnham moved to eliminate the 5% value-added tax on domestic electricity bills. The policy, set to take effect October 1, aims to blunt the impact of recent energy price hikes while curbing inflation by putting more money back into consumer pockets.

UK Labour Scraps Electricity VAT to Ease Household Energy Costs

The government confirmed the tax relief will be fully financed through the cancellation of the nation’s £1.8 billion Digital ID program. By targeting the October Ofgem price cap, the move is projected to save the average household approximately £45 annually. Officials expect energy suppliers to pass these savings directly to customers, including those currently locked into fixed-rate tariffs.

Beyond private households, the relief extends to charities, residential care homes, and small businesses that qualify for domestic energy VAT exemptions. This intervention arrives as the UK grapples with a 13% surge in energy prices, triggered by a quarterly adjustment from the regulator Ofgem following volatility in wholesale gas markets. The administration intends for this measure to provide immediate fiscal breathing room as global energy costs remain unstable.
