IAB Tech Lab Refines Podcast Measurement Standards for Video and RSS

The IAB Tech Lab has unveiled Version 2.3 of its Podcast Technical Measurement Guidelines, aiming to resolve long-standing inconsistencies in how the industry tracks downloads and ad delivery. Open for public comment until August 19, 2026, the update introduces stricter protocols for server-side log analysis across both audio and video formats.

The revised framework addresses the technical friction caused by disparate measurement methods in the podcast ecosystem. By renaming the standard unit of measurement from "listener" to "podcast consumer," the organization is laying the groundwork for a broader v3.0 update scheduled for 2027, which will prioritize the rapidly expanding video podcast market.

Key technical adjustments include new guidance on URL prefix measurement, handling RSS enclosure changes, and mitigating invalid traffic. Because most podcast applications currently lack client-side playback confirmation, the industry remains reliant on server-side log data. Anthony Katsur, CEO of IAB Tech Lab, noted that standardizing these metrics is essential to eliminate the reporting discrepancies that frequently stall advertising negotiations. Industry leaders from Triton Digital and Podtrac have signaled their support, emphasizing that consistent data collection is vital for maintaining buyer confidence in the medium.
