Omio Group moves to acquire Rail Europe in rail distribution shake-up

By absorbing the 90-year-old rail veteran Rail Europe, Berlin-based Omio Group aims to command a massive slice of the global ground transportation market. The deal, announced July 21, 2026, positions the combined entity to manage 22 million annual ticket sales across a network spanning more than 70 countries.

The acquisition integrates Rail Europe’s extensive B2B distribution network and international consumer brand into the Omio ecosystem, which already includes the Rome2Rio discovery platform. While Rail Europe will retain its distinct brand identity, it will leverage Omio’s proprietary technology stack to modernize its operations. The move arrives as the global rail sector anticipates significant growth, with market projections exceeding $300 billion by 2032 as European governments funnel capital into rail infrastructure to displace road and air travel.

Jean-Francois Bessiron, Chief B2B Officer at Omio, characterized the sector as historically hindered by legacy systems and consolidated control, noting that the merger aims to provide the scale necessary for accessible, interconnected travel. Björn Bender, CEO of Rail Europe, echoed this sentiment, describing the integration as a natural evolution that combines his company’s deep rail expertise with Omio’s digital infrastructure. Finalization of the transaction remains pending, subject to a mandatory consultation process with the Comité Social et Économique.
