Colin Rocker Turns Networking Prompts Into Physical Cards

Networking has become an exercise in peak efficiency, where optimized profiles and digital connections often replace genuine human rapport. To counter this, Colin Rocker, founder of the New York-based community For The Firsts, has launched a deck of 40 physical conversation cards designed to bypass small talk and foster deeper professional relationships.

The product, titled First Round, emerged from a recurring pattern Rocker observed at his own networking events. While attendees arrived expecting standard career-focused inquiries, the introduction of unconventional questions consistently shifted the atmosphere. Discussions that typically revolved around job titles and company metrics transformed into exchanges about personal identity, defining life decisions, and shared experiences.

Rocker, a Forbes 30 Under 30 creator, developed the deck by curating prompts that have been tested across dozens of community gatherings. These cards are intended for use in environments ranging from team off-sites to casual coffee chats, aiming to restore curiosity to professional life. Patrick Zielinski, co-founder of The Drive Agency, noted that while professionals have mastered the art of personal branding, the ability to build authentic connections has become a distinct and increasingly sought-after skill.

Beyond just a networking tool, the project reflects Rocker’s broader philosophy regarding the term "First." He intends to broaden the definition beyond traditional milestones, such as being the first in a family to attend college, to include anyone who has navigated a unique path or reinvented their career trajectory. By providing a framework for these stories to surface, the cards seek to move professional discourse away from transactional interactions toward more meaningful human engagement.
