West Fraser Timber Co., North America’s largest lumber producer, emerged as one of the day’s steepest decliners following the announcement of the Canadian trade restrictions. The impact underscores the fragility of North American supply chains currently grappling with energy price hikes and ongoing instability in the Mideast.
Contrasting the sector's broader anxiety, Steel Dynamics reported a robust second-quarter performance. The company posted a profit of $534.1 million, or $3.69 per share, a significant jump from the $298.7 million, or $2.01 per share, recorded during the same period last year. Management attributed this growth to sustained demand and stronger pricing power within their steel division.
Separately, Kalshi is pushing to expand the scope of commodity trading. The prediction-market provider has petitioned the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to authorize perpetual futures contracts for gold, silver, and platinum. If approved, these non-expiring derivatives would allow users to speculate on spot prices in a market that remains sensitive to global geopolitical shocks.
