Celldex Halts Barzolvolimab Skin Trial After Efficacy Failure

A 6% drop in share price followed Celldex Therapeutics' decision to scrap a Phase 2 study of barzolvolimab for prurigo nodularis. The drug failed to outperform a placebo in reducing skin lesions or chronic itch, forcing the company to abandon the subcutaneous treatment path for this specific patient population.

The clinical setback marks a departure from earlier expectations. Chief Executive Officer Anthony Marucci expressed disappointment that the robust tryptase reductions recorded during the trial did not translate into tangible symptomatic relief for patients. These results stand in stark contrast to the promising signals observed during the intravenous Phase 1b trial, which had initially fueled optimism for the treatment.

Despite the failure in treating prurigo nodularis, Celldex remains focused on other applications for barzolvolimab. The company confirmed it is continuing its evaluation of the drug for chronic spontaneous urticaria, symptomatic dermographism, and cold urticaria. Investors reacted sharply to the news, pulling the stock down to $33.52 in after-hours trading on Tuesday.
