Santander Profit Climbs Despite British Restructuring Costs

A 3% rise in second-quarter net profit pushed Santander’s earnings to €3.52 billion, as the Spanish banking giant navigated a complex integration of the British lender TSB. While revenue growth provided a necessary tailwind, significant restructuring charges across the UK market tempered the overall financial performance for the period.

The euro zone’s largest lender by market value saw its bottom line improve from the €3.43 billion recorded during the same quarter last year. This growth was bolstered by two months of contributions from TSB, though the integration process required a €250 million charge against earnings.

When excluding these specific restructuring costs, Santander’s underlying net profit surged 17% year-on-year to reach €3.77 billion. This figure narrowly outperformed the €3.75 billion consensus among analysts polled by Reuters, signaling resilience in the bank’s core operations despite the localized expenses.
