Nike Overhauls China Strategy as Distributor Sales Plummet

A 28% stock plunge for Topsports International followed Nike’s abrupt decision to terminate its online distribution contracts across mainland China. By consolidating digital sales into its own platforms, the sportswear giant aims to curb brand fragmentation while confronting a sharp decline in regional revenue and rising local competition.

Nike Overhauls China Strategy as Distributor Sales Plummet

Starting in January, Nike will centralize its online presence exclusively through its official website, mobile app, and flagship stores on Tmall, JD.com, and Douyin. This transition removes third-party retailers from the digital space, marking a pivot toward a direct-to-consumer model. The move directly impacts partners like Topsports, which reported that online sales of Nike products comprised one-fifth of its total revenue last fiscal year.

Cathy Sparks, Nike’s vice president for Greater China, argued that the current digital ecosystem had become too fragmented to maintain brand consistency. However, the company faces a difficult environment, as revenue in the region dropped 11% over the latest fiscal year. Local rivals like Anta and Li Ning have aggressively captured market share, creating a challenging backdrop for Nike’s new strategy.

Market analysts remain skeptical of the shift. Experts at Citi warned that prioritizing a direct-to-consumer digital strategy while the company’s physical retail footprint struggles with declining traffic could lead to further market-share erosion. While Nike intends to maintain its offline partnerships, the sudden restructuring highlights the company's struggle to regain its footing in a cooling Chinese market.
