USRA Launches UK Hub at Space Park Leicester to Bridge Transatlantic Research

The Universities Space Research Association is planting its first corporate flag on British soil, establishing a new entity at Space Park Leicester. Announced at the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow, the move aims to integrate the Washington-based non-profit directly into the UK’s rapidly expanding space economy and European research networks.

The expansion marks a significant evolution for the 57-year-old organization, which has historically operated through ten regions, nine of which are concentrated in North America. By anchoring itself within the University of Leicester’s £100 million innovation hub, USRA intends to leverage local expertise in space instrumentation and nuclear power systems to accelerate collaborative hardware development and talent exchange.

This shift follows the 2023 creation of "Region X," a geographic division dedicated to European universities. Professor Richard Ambrosi, who serves as the first trustee representing this region, noted that the partnership serves as a strategic conduit for cross-disciplinary research. Dr. Elsayed Talaat, President and CEO of USRA, characterized the move as a milestone for the organization’s long-term growth, citing the necessity of bridging academic expertise with industry requirements. The UK Space Agency welcomed the arrival, with Head of Space Science Dr. Caroline Harper describing the decision as a testament to the strength and ambition of the domestic sector.
